Eating in Copenhagen
In this blog post, we will explore the best food options in Copenhagen, helping you organize yourself to get the most out of the city.
We’ll consider quality, price, and how to eat healthy without breaking your budget.
This blog post will be mainly about eating day to day, for snacking and dinner, there will be another post that will cover those topics as they are vast.
Groceries store
When moving to another country, everything needs to be learned anew. When you grow up in a country, you’re so used to where you live and so deeply integrated that you don’t even have to think about getting the most out of the city - it comes naturally through living there.
But when you move to a new country, you may not have time to learn everything, even though you really want to understand it all. The word that describes these feelings is “experience”. This is why I’m writing this blog post - to help people gain that experience as quickly as possible.
In this section, we will explore all the different grocery stores.
Netto
Netto is the cheapest groceries store, but it’s the most common store around Copenhagen.
Most of them are little and do not offer a large varieties of product to buy.
I would recommend this store for when you need a specific item to buy, but I would not recommend it for large buying.
Fotex
This store offers higher quality products than discount stores. There are some small locations across the city but also several large stores that are really convenient for weekly shopping.
I would recommend this one as it strikes a good balance between discount stores and more expensive options.
Lidl
Lidl is well known throughout Europe, and most of their stores in the city are quite big.
I would say the quality is slightly lower than Føtex, but they offer a wide range of products that you can’t find elsewhere.
I recommend giving it a try.
REMA 1000
SuperBrugsen
This is a high quality store, with the price coming, there is no many in the city.
Meny
365 Discount
Nemlig
Nemlig is an online groceries store that allows to buy groceries and get them delivered straight to your place. Depending of your situation, could be very convenient.
Torvehallerne
This is the most expensive option, but also the highest quality - it’s not even a grocery store but rather a market in Copenhagen.
It has been recognized as one of the best markets in Europe.
While it’s considered a food market, you can also buy groceries here.
It’s worth visiting at least once to form your own opinion - it’s also a great place to hang out with friends or family.
A must try anyway.
Community dinner
Since eating at restaurants is very expensive, several community dinner options have emerged in Copenhagen.
Eating at restaurants here is different from some countries where you might spontaneously decide to dine out with family or friends.
Restaurants in Copenhagen are quite expensive but offer excellent quality, meaning that while you won’t eat out every day, it’s really special when you do.
Absalon
Absalon is very curious, from their own definition on their website, the community is basically an extension of our own living room.
They are also cooking dishes that you can book to go eat with your friends or family for small price (60dkk at that time).
One bowl
One bowl is a bit less accesible in a sense that it’s toward people with precarity.
Food apps
In Copenhagen, at the time of writing, Uber Eats and Deliveroo are not available in the city.
Wolt
Wolt is like Uber eat and Deliveroo.
They are well implemented in the city and provide a food delivery services.
TooGoodToGo
TooGoodToGo is well established in Copenhagen.
In general, food waste is something the Danes care deeply about.
It’s very common for food businesses to sell their leftover items at a discounted price to those interested.
This practice is completely normalized - there’s no stigma attached to it at all.
eTilbudsavis
If you are looking for discount on food in food store.
There is an app for that in the nordics:
You can create list of groceries depending of the food store and the discount applied on the product.
