Instagram

Before coming to Copenhagen, I spent countless hours browsing Instagram to learn about Danish social life: how locals spend their time, what their hobbies are, and what they do on weekends.

Instagram turned out to be an excellent resource for finding authentic activities that locals actually participate in. While browsing, I collected a list of Instagram accounts that could help newcomers integrate faster into Copenhagen’s social scene.

I’m sharing my findings here to save you some time and effort in your own research.

Please note that while these Instagram accounts were active at the time of writing, some may become inactive over time. Make sure to verify that the accounts are still up-to-date when you check them.

Meetup.com

Meetup is a platform where you can organize and attend professional or casual events to connect with people.

Dovento

Dovento is a relatively new app in Copenhagen that, similar to Meetup.com but more casual, helps you connect with other expats in town through various activities.

TripBFF

TripBFF is primarily designed for travelers looking to find people to hang out with while traveling. However, it can also be an effective way to connect with people locally.

InterNations

InterNations is a more formal platform for connecting with expats in any city, and it has an active community in Copenhagen.

One drawback I experienced with InterNations is their strong focus on monetization, which somewhat diminishes the user experience. There are numerous paywalls when trying to access features, and the membership requires a long-term commitment of several months.

Facebook social events

Facebook remains very popular in Denmark, unlike some countries where it’s mainly used for scams.

Danish Language courses

Taking Danish language classes is almost always beneficial. It helps you:

  • Better integrate into your host country
  • Make friends during the learning journey

Here are the two best schools that offer free courses if you have a CPR number:

Important things to keep in mind:

  • They require a 2000 DKK deposit to ensure exam participation
  • The deposit is refunded after completing the exams
  • If you drop out before taking the exams, you forfeit your deposit
  • Classes can be time-intensive, typically requiring up to 4 hours per week plus homework
